In this article we will look at the overall myths, legends, folk tales, urban myths and hear-say surrounding Search Engines.
If you type in the word ‘Hawaii Scuba’ into Google, you will get at the time of writing, 15,200,000 returns. That’s 11 pages per inhabitant, and not all Hawaiian’s dive! Nearly all ‘SEO magicians/sorcerers/experts’ claim that they will get you ranked higher than was ever thought possible. This is because in their world Google has 200 entries available on page 1. To be honest what they do is just tinker around to find what Gooogle does actually rank you on, and then report back to you. The said magicians complete with robes and a twinkle in their eye, will, say “Ah yes you shall be the fairest of them all for ‘big, lake, diving in Arkansas!’ And promptly raise an nice invoice for the pleasure.
The Rules
The fact is you have to look at what Google is trying to achieve in order to dispel most of the myths that surround it. You have to understand that Google is a business first and foremost. It is not ‘the internet’ and it is certainly not an authority in any way on the rules of the internet, only the rules of appearing on Google apply.
If you were to type in ‘Hawaii Scuba’ and the majority of returns were about Hawaii geography/history/tours and scuba diving in any other geographic location, you would probably be switching to another search engine quite rapidly. What their entire purpose is (apart from making biblical amounts of cash) to make sure the user gets the most relevant return on a search.
In The Know
With this is in mind you are now completely armed to the teeth to disrupt anyone mid-flow on how Google works, or does not. When someone pipes up with “Oh I hear the rules are all changing,” you can quite simply stop them in their tracks. Ask them if they bothered to inform the millions upon millions of website owners, as any rules which stop the person searching for them surely counters the point of having a relevant search engine?
