Question: “Does social networking help get my website noticed on the internet?”
Answer: There is a lot of debate about social networking supporting your website presence on the internet. One thing I would like to stress from the start is “Facebook is definitely NOT a substitute for a good website,” or even a bad one!
The aspect of social networking is relatively new, and you can easily find your Facebook page if you tap in the name of your company onto a search engine. But, and this is the major flaw in it, how many of your customers do you acquire via Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, etc.? How many search for your services or products in this particular way? My guess is, from experience, next to none.
If you tap in <your type of business> followed by <your location> you won’t find those Facebook pages on page 1 of Google, Bing or Yahoo. You will only find people that work hard and smart on their websites, or pay people to do that for them. Now as a customer retention tool, it can work great, but keep posts to a minimum, or at least very interesting, as they may block you as ‘spam’ otherwise.
Lastly, people do not use these social networks as search engines to find your products and services, so there is no value in them driving traffic to you.
